Yoga Therapy & Ayurveda

“Yoga therapy, derived from the Yoga tradition of Patanjali and the Ayurvedic system of health care refers to the adaptation and application of Yoga techniques and practices to help individuals facing health challenges at any level manage their condition, reduce symptoms, restore balance, increase vitality, and improve attitude.”

-
Gary Kraftsow American Viniyoga Institute

Yoga Therapy and Ayurveda are supplemental, holistic systems that work with those seeking better health using methods that consider all aspects of the individual and not just the symptoms involved. Ayurveda is the traditional medical system of India which is based on the notion that health is a product of balance within the body, mind, and spirit; and the pathway to finding balance is as unique as the individual seeking it.

In the system of Ayurveda, each one of us has a unique constitution or set point where we feel healthy, strong and full of vitality. By understanding your personal constitution and current dietary and lifestyle choices, an Ayurvedic specialist will help guide you to make better choices to support your well-being. This may involve the addition or elimination of certain lifestyle activities and/or foods in your diet. She may also recommend the addition of common dietary herbs that have medicinal qualities to enhance the healing process--such as turmeric for its
anti-inflammatory properties or ginger as a digestive aid. A Yoga therapist, guided by the same principles of Ayurveda, will work more on a physical level to recommend asana (yoga postures), pranayama (breathing practices), meditation and other tools from the vast wisdom of Yoga to promote balance.

COMPLIMENTARY THERAPIES

A Southern Star Ayurvedic specialist or Yoga therapist will often work in tandem with your doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, and psychotherapists to address the roots of your wellness concerns as well as the subsequent life-altering effects of living with chronic pain or illness.  If there is something out of balance in your life, whether it be an injured back or a stress related disorder, we understand that the source of the problem can be multi-faceted, and the symptoms can affect you on many levels:  physically, emotionally and mentally. While we have a great respect for the wealth of knowledge within the traditional medical system, we also know that healing starts from within. There are tools from Yoga and Ayurveda that have been proven not only to support, but to enhance your current medical care. Considering every dimension of the problem including diet, lifestyle, relationships, seasonal changes, and major life events, we recommend the appropriate tools from the traditions of Yoga and Ayurveda to help you manage whatever challenge you face and return a sense of balance to your life, so that healing can take place.

LISA CARADINE

In 2010 I was introduced to Ayurveda while taking a Yoga of Recovery Course - a class combining Yoga, Ayurveda and the Twelve Step program to help those dealing with addiction. My interest in Ayurveda sparked, and I progressed with an Ayurveda/Yoga Therapy Course taught by Dr. Marc Halpern. I later began studies to become a Clinical Ayurvedic Specialist by attending California College of Ayurveda. I have completed two years of classwork, and have a year of clinical internship remaining to complete my degree. I have traveled to Coimbatore, India, where I stayed at Vaidyagrama Ashram. There I received Pancha Karma, a deep Ayurvedic cleansing using an assortment of herbal medicines, body treatments, and a prescribed minimal diet, and also studied in depth with Ayurvedic doctors. I currently offer Ayurvedic Consultations to help people balance their daily lives through diet, lifestyle modifications, and herbal remedies based on their unique physical and mental constitution.
